Michigan Man Sentenced for Copper Scam
BUFFALO, N.Y.—A 51-year-old man from Fowerville, Michigan, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for making false statements to federal agents.
Michael T. Henson was convicted of the crime and ordered to pay restitution of $127,091.08 to the victims in the case.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, Henson was contracted to transport a shipment of 20 tons of copper and brass from Buffalo, N.Y. to Lonoke, Arkansas, and Midland, Texas. The shipment was valued at approximately $130,000.
However, Henson picked up the shipment in Buffalo on June 22, 2010, but it was never delivered to its intended recipients. He then lied to a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, claiming that he had dumped the load of copper along a rural road near West Memphis, Arkansas.
But cellular telephone records revealed that Henson did not travel to Arkansas during the relevant time period, contradicting his claim.
The conviction was the result of an investigation by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent-In-Charge, Brian P. Boetig.
Henson’s sentence brings an end to a case that spanned several years and involved a significant loss for the victims.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in business dealings.
