YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Christopher Helmick, 41, will spend the next two decades plus behind bars after a federal judge slammed him with a 23-year sentence for a sickening trove of child pornography and predatory online behavior.
Helmick was sentenced this week by U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko after pleading guilty to receiving and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and possessing it. The feds hit his Youngstown home with a search warrant last July, uncovering 1,898 images and 848 videos depicting the sexual abuse of babies and the torture of young girls. It wasn’t just possession; Helmick was actively swapping this filth with others through social media chat groups.
But the depravity didn’t stop there. Investigators found Helmick was grooming underage girls online, befriending them and then showering them with gifts – specifically, giving them his credit card to buy sex toys and lingerie. He also sent explicit photos of himself and manipulated the girls into sending him nude images. The creep was ordered to pay $63,500 in restitution and will face 10 years of supervised release after he serves his time.
The bust was a joint effort by the FBI’s Youngstown office and the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer J. King handled the prosecution. The case is part of “Project Safe Childhood,” a nationwide push to crack down on child sexual exploitation.
