NEW ORLEANS – Terrence Thompson Jr., 24, is headed to the federal pen after pleading guilty to a simple but brazen scheme: ripping off the mail. Thompson was sentenced March 18, 2026, after copping to possessing a legitimate US Postal Service “arrow” key – the kind used by letter carriers – and using it to systematically pilfer mail from the Gretna, Louisiana post office.

Federal prosecutors say Thompson didn’t just swipe a few bills. He snagged approximately 232 pieces of mail deposited in authorized collection boxes. While the specifics of what he was after – checks, IDs, cash – haven’t been fully detailed, the sheer volume indicates a calculated operation. The feds hit him with charges under Title 18, US Code, Sections 1704 (unlawful key possession) and 1708 (mail theft).

U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle’s office hasn’t released details on the length of Thompson’s sentence, but possession of a USPS key and widespread mail theft carry significant penalties. This isn’t some kid grabbing a birthday card; this is a calculated violation of trust in the postal system, and the courts treated it as such.
