Methamphetamine Trafficking Ring Cracks in San Antonio

In a major blow to the city’s underworld, four individuals have been sentenced for their roles in a San Antonio methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy. The case, which involved the notorious Hermanos Pistoleros Latinos (HPL) gang, was announced by United States Attorney Robert Pitman and San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.

Senior U.S. District Judge David Ezra handed down the sentences, which ranged from probation to 13 years in federal prison. Serafin Villanueva, a 37-year-old active member of the HPL, received the longest sentence at 130 months. He was joined by James Lopez (70 months), Gilbert Guzman (50 months), and Felisha Salinas (five years of probation).

The investigation, which began in September 2012, revealed a methamphetamine distribution network operating out of a custom paint and auto body shop, A-1 Kustom. Investigators with the San Antonio Police Department Gang and Intelligence Units worked tirelessly to dismantle the operation, which ultimately led to the arrest of Guzman, Salinas, Lopez, and Villanueva on January 28, 2013. The seizure of approximately 80 grams of methamphetamine marked a significant victory in the fight against methamphetamine trafficking in San Antonio.

The case is not an isolated incident, as a separate but related indictment saw Andres Sanchez, a high-ranking HPL member, sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Assistant United States Attorney David Shearer prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

The sentences handed down in this case serve as a stark reminder of the harsh consequences of engaging in organized crime in San Antonio. As the city continues to grapple with the issue of methamphetamine trafficking, it is clear that law enforcement is committed to dismantling these networks and bringing perpetrators to justice.

In a statement, United States Attorney Robert Pitman emphasized the importance of the investigation, saying, ‘This case is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our law enforcement partners in San Antonio. We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these networks, and bring those responsible to justice.’

As the city looks to the future, one thing is clear: the war on methamphetamine trafficking is far from over. But with the help of dedicated law enforcement officials and a commitment to justice, San Antonio can continue to move forward and become a safer, more prosperous community for all.
