Las Cruces Duo Sentenced for Massive Methamphetamine Trafficking Operation
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Mark Anthony Harriman, 45, and Agustin Abascal, 27, both of Las Cruces, N.M., have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their roles in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation in Doña Ana County.
According to federal authorities, Harriman and Abascal conspired to distribute methamphetamine between November 2012 and March 2013, selling the highly addictive substance on several occasions to an undercover New Mexico State Police officer and an informant. The duo was arrested in mid-April 2013 and has been in federal custody ever since.
Harriman pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute between February and March 2013, and unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition on March 15, 2013. He was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to a previous conviction for attempted assault in the first degree in Honolulu, Hawaii.
As part of his plea agreement, Harriman will be sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. He will also be required to forfeit nine firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, a 2002 Mitsubishi Mirage, and $13,940 in cash.
Abascal, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to distributing methamphetamine during the same time period. In his plea agreement, Abascal admitted to selling methamphetamine on five occasions to an undercover officer. He faces a sentence of not less than 10 years and not more than life in prison at sentencing.
The case was investigated by the Las Cruces office of the DEA, the Las Cruces/Doña Ana County Metro Narcotics Agency, and the New Mexico State Police, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Renee L. Camacho of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office prosecuting the case.
Harriman and Abascal remain detained pending their sentencing hearings, which have yet to be scheduled.
