Adrian Antonio Chavez, Being a Drug User in Possession of a Firearm, Texas 2021
In a shocking turn of events, 52-year-old Adrian Antonio Chavez, a practicing attorney in Odessa, has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for being a drug user in possession of a firearm.
On February 19, 2021, officers from the Odessa Police Department executed a search warrant at Chavez' residence after receiving information that he had received quantities of methamphetamine. During the search, officers recovered a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm, a Taurus Brasil 357 Magnum, a Rossi RS22 .22 caliber rifle, a Remington Wingmaster 870TB 12-gauge shotgun, and a Remington 770 .30-06 caliber rifle. A quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were also confiscated.
On April 15, 2021, Chavez entered a guilty plea to one count of being a drug user in possession of a firearm before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald C. Griffin.
Chavez will also have to pay a $10,000 fine as part of his sentence. Additionally, he will be placed on supervised release for three years after his prison term. This case was investigated by the Odessa Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Glenn Harwood prosecuted this case.
The case against Chavez highlights the severity of the consequences for individuals who possess firearms while under the influence of drugs.
