Brett Michael Detamore, Wire Fraud, Texas 2024

Published August 23, 2024

A Houston custom home builder has admitted to misusing construction funds, defrauding homeowners out of at least $1.5 million.

Brett Michael Detamore, operating as a custom home builder under Detamore Development LLC, pleaded guilty to wire fraud, a federal crime that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The 39-year-old defendant submitted false and fraudulent invoices to banks holding construction loans for single-family residences he had been contracted to build. The false invoices caused the banks to send funds to bank accounts Detamore controlled, which he then used for his personal benefit.

As part of his plea agreement, Detamore agreed to forfeit at least $1.5 million he illegally obtained. He will be sentenced on November 5 and faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

The FBI conducted the investigation with the assistance of the West University Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Karen Lansden and Suzanne Elmilady are prosecuting the case.

The case highlights the importance of due diligence in the construction industry, where homeowners often entrust thousands of dollars to builders. Detamore's actions have left many wondering how he was able to deceive banks and homeowners for so long.

The outcome of this case serves as a warning to those who would seek to profit from the trust of others. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
