Daniel McLaurin, Human Smuggling, Texas 2024

Published July 25, 2022

LAREDO, Texas - In a shocking display of brazen disregard for the law, 39-year-old Daniel McLaurin of Petal, Mississippi, has been convicted of smuggling seven undocumented aliens in the sleeper cab of his tractor-trailer. The verdict comes after a one-day trial in Laredo, Texas, where a federal jury deliberated for approximately 15 minutes before finding McLaurin guilty.

According to officials, on April 22, McLaurin drove his tractor-trailer into a Border Patrol checkpoint on IH-35 north of Laredo. When law enforcement asked McLaurin if there were any passengers in his vehicle, he claimed to have only one passenger, stating that they were both U.S. citizens. However, further inspection revealed images in the sleeper cab that appeared to be human bodies.

Authorities then conducted a search and discovered seven undocumented individuals inside the tractor cab. It was later determined that they were unlawfully present in the country. The incident has raised serious concerns about the ease with which smugglers can operate in the region.

The case was investigated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gerard A. Cantu and Brandon Bowling prosecuting the case. U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo presided over the trial and will impose sentencing at a later date.

At that time, McLaurin faces up to 10 years in prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. He was permitted to remain on bond pending the hearing.

The conviction is a significant blow to those who seek to exploit the vulnerabilities of our immigration system. It serves as a reminder that human smuggling is a serious crime with severe consequences. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
