David Ray Camez, Cybercrime, Nevada 2013

Published May 15, 2014

David Ray Camez, a 22-year-old from Phoenix, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a sophisticated cybercrime organization.

Camez was convicted of one count of participating in a racketeer-influenced corrupt organization and one count of conspiracy to participate in a racketeer-influenced corrupt organization.

The organization, known as Carder.su, was a highly structured cyber network that operated like a business to commit fraud on a global scale.

Camez was one of 39 charged in an indictment returned in January 2012, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Andrew P. Gordon on December 6, 2013.

In addition to his prison term, Camez was also sentenced to serve three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $20 million in restitution.

U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden stated that cybercrime has grown into an industry and is rapidly overtaking traditional crime, and that the Justice Department will continue working with international law enforcement partners to track and prosecute this new wave of thieves.

Camez's sentence demonstrates that cyber-criminals who harm innocent Americans and compromise the world's economic stability will be aggressively pursued, investigated, and prosecuted.

The investigation into the Carder.su organization was a joint effort between the United States Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

The organization operated an Internet web portal called a forum, where members could purchase illicitly obtained data and share knowledge of various fraud schemes.

Camez's case is a reminder that cybercrime is a serious threat that requires a coordinated effort to combat.
