Isaiah Rene Acosta, Fentanyl Distribution, Texas 2021

Published February 11, 2026

An El Paso man was sentenced in federal court to 188 months in prison for distribution of fentanyl causing death.

Isaiah Rene Acosta, 28, was found guilty of selling three counterfeit M-30 pills containing fentanyl to an individual who purchased the pills on behalf of herself and another person. The pill recipients used the counterfeit M-30 pills the next day and shortly thereafter, one of the individuals died of fentanyl poisoning.

Further analysis determined that the deceased “would not have died but for acute intoxication of fentanyl.” An investigation revealed that Acosta sold fentanyl pills and marijuana to both of the individuals on more than one occasion.

Acosta was indicted on February 5, 2025, and arrested on February 21, 2025. He pleaded guilty on November 18.

“Substance abuse in our communities—particularly fentanyl abuse—has been a persistent problem that has affected so many Americans,” said U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons.

“Many thanks to our law enforcement partners at the Drug Enforcement Administration, for their work on this case and so many cases like it,” said U.S. Attorney Simmons.

The DEA investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip Countryman prosecuted the case.

In a statement, Omar Arellano, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s El Paso Division, said, “This case serves as a stern warning to other drug dealers. If the drugs you sell kill someone, the DEA will investigate, build a case against you, and see that you face the consequences.”
