James Patrick Burns, Child Exploitation, Nevada 2021
Nevada Man Convicted of Child Exploitation
A federal jury in Nevada has convicted a man of sexually exploiting multiple minors and advertising child pornography, according to the latest investigation by Grimy Times.
James Patrick Burns, 55, of Sparks, Nevada, was convicted of eight counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, eight counts of coercion and enticement of a minor, and one count each of advertising, receiving, distributing, and possessing child pornography.
Between 2018 and 2021, Burns sexually exploited multiple minors online via Omegle, Snapchat, Tiktok, and Mega.NZ, threatening them into producing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). He then posted the CSAM on dark web forums.
Burns, a registered sex offender, victimized over 100 children, many of whom have yet to be identified.
The case came to the attention of law enforcement when a mother of one of his victims saw threats on the victim's phone and reported what she saw to the police.
Burns is scheduled to be sentenced on June 10 and faces a mandatory minimum of at least 25 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison.
A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
In a separate trial, the jury also convicted Burns of committing specified felony offenses while required to register as a sex offender.
The FBI-led Northern Nevada Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force investigated the case, with assistance from local law enforcement and other agencies.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frierson, and other officials made the announcement.
Burns is currently being held without bail and is awaiting sentencing.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
