Drug Smuggler Sent to Prison for Six-Kilo Cocaine Seizure at Bridge

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – In a significant blow to the narcotics trade, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen residing in Matamoros, Mexico, has been sentenced for conspiracy to possess and possession with intent to distribute 6.16 kilograms of cocaine.

Javier Eduardo Vicencio pleaded guilty on August 24, 2023, to charges stemming from a dramatic cocaine seizure at the Gateway Port of Entry in Brownsville.

On May 2, 2023, Vicencio drove into the United States through the Gateway Port of Entry in Brownsville. He was the sole occupant of a Chevy Cobalt bearing Mexican license plates. Initially, Vicencio denied possessing any contraband, but his nervous demeanor raised suspicions, leading to a secondary inspection.

It was during the secondary inspection that authorities observed anomalies in the side passenger firewall, resulting in the discovery of 35.4 pounds of cocaine – a staggering 6.16 kilograms.

Vicencio claimed his family had owned the vehicle for about 10 years and that he was attempting to 'help' them by crossing the border with cocaine. He believed he would receive payment of $1,000 per trip for delivery to others in Brownsville.

U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. has now ordered Vicencio to serve 48 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. The court emphasized the seriousness of the offense, the need to protect the public, and the importance of deterring criminal conduct, given Vicencio's prior successful drug crossings.

Vicencio will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Oscar Ponce prosecuting the case.

The sentencing comes as a significant victory in the ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking in the region. As the authorities continue to crack down on drug smugglers, it is clear that Vicencio's actions will have severe consequences.
