Grimy Times: A 28-year-old Edinburg man has been ordered to prison following his convictions of alien smuggling and harboring undocumented aliens. Jose Luis Tobias was handed a 30-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez after a federal jury convicted him in December 2012.

Tobias was found guilty of two counts of conspiring to harbor and transport undocumented aliens and three counts of harboring undocumented aliens. The evidence presented at the trial showed that Tobias was involved in the transportation of 31 undocumented aliens at an apartment in Edinburg on September 25, 2012. He was also found to have assisted in delivering food to the undocumented aliens at the apartment.

The defense had argued that Tobias was not involved in the alien smuggling and, therefore, not guilty. However, the jury disagreed and found him guilty of the five counts of alien smuggling as charged. This conviction is a significant blow to those involved in human trafficking in the region.

The investigation into Tobias's activities was carried out by the Border Patrol, with assistance from the Edinburg Police Department and the Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Constable's Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Kristen Rees and Kim Leo prosecuted the case.

Tobias was previously released on bond but was taken into custody following the sentencing. He will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
