BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A brazen crime has shaken the community, as a convicted felon has been sentenced to federal prison for re-entering the United States. Juan Ramon Arevalo-Guzman, a 44-year-old Mexican national, was ordered to serve an 84-month term of imprisonment by U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera.

According to authorities, Arevalo-Guzman has a history of violent felony robberies in Hidalgo County. In 2002 and 2008, he committed aggravated felony convictions, terrorizing and robbing U.S. citizens at knife point. One instance involved carjacking and forcing the victim to drive him to another city before stealing the vehicle.

On more than 15 separate occasions, Arevalo-Guzman robbed or caused disturbances at a local Hidalgo County church by assaulting the members in the parking lot. Following his last conviction, he was removed from the United States on February 15, 2017. However, he re-entered the country illegally on or about November 1, 2018.

Arevalo-Guzman was found in the Rio Grande River area near Donna by Border Patrol authorities. He has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Schorr Dinsdale prosecuted the case, which was conducted by Border Patrol.
