Kassie Bond Carpenter, Obstruction of Justice, Texas 2019

Published August 20, 2020

A Denison woman who faked stomach cancer to delay a prison sentence has been sentenced to an additional 5 years in federal prison. Kassie Bond Carpenter, 42, pleaded guilty in February to obstruction of justice.

Carpenter was originally sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for wire fraud, but she attempted to delay her reporting date by submitting forged medical records indicating she had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Based on these sham records, the court granted multiple extensions, delaying her prison reporting date from August 22, 2017 to January 30, 2018, then to August 7, 2018, then to November 6, 2018, then to January 29, 2019, and finally to April 29, 2019.

On January 29, 2019, Carpenter's defense attorney moved to withdraw from the case, stating that he believed he had been 'an unwitting tool in a fraud on this Court' due to potential deceit by his client. Two days later, U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater vacated his order extending Carpenter's reporting date, and ordered her arrested.

The 60-month sentence handed down today will be served consecutive to the 41-month sentence handed down by Judge Fitzwater in the wire fraud case. In that case, Carpenter pleaded guilty to embezzling $133,000 in checks payable to herself and $157,000 in checks payable to a fictitious company she created, resulting in over $372,000 in losses to the property management company.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Dallas Field Office investigated both the wire fraud case and the obstruction case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Stokes prosecuted both cases.
