Morgan Kanu-Bradley, Assault and Robbery, Texas 2019
HOUSTON, Texas - In a shocking turn of events, Morgan Kanu-Bradley, a 20-year-old from Spring, Texas, has been sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for his role in the assault and robbery of undercover agents during a drug operation in early 2019.
The incident occurred on February 17, 2019, when undercover federal agents, working with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), arranged to purchase narcotics from DeAnthony Doucet, a 23-year-old from Baytown, at a hotel in Houston. Kanu-Bradley, Doucet, and their accomplice, Avery James, 22, of Baytown, held the agents at gunpoint and stole the money they had for the transaction, as well as one of their firearms and a phone. One of the agents was beaten and stomped on while being held at gunpoint, suffering severe injuries, including bruises and a laceration to his face that required stitches.
Kanu-Bradley, James, and Doucet were identified members of a gang in Baytown known as the 'Gas Gang.' They were each convicted on two counts of assaulting federal agents, three counts of robbery, including a conspiracy count, and one count of possession of a firearm during and in furtherance of a crime of violence.
Chief U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal handed down the sentence to Kanu-Bradley, citing the extremely violent nature of the offense and Kanu-Bradley's lack of remorse for his actions. The defense had asked for a lower sentence, but the judge deemed it unacceptable. Kanu-Bradley's accomplices, James and Doucet, had previously been sentenced to 130 and 120 months in prison, respectively, also to be followed by three years of supervised release.
The ATF Special Agent in Charge, Fred Milanowski, expressed his satisfaction with the sentence, stating, 'The blatant disregard for human life that was shown when Kanu-Bradley beat and held an undercover Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) special agent at gunpoint while robbing him deserves nothing less than the maximum allowable sentence.'
The OCDETF operation, led by the ATF, was conducted in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and police departments in Baytown and Houston. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Richard Bennett and Jimmy Leo prosecuted the case.
Kanu-Bradley, James, and Doucet have been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
