Robinson Mendoza-Gomez, Assaulting a Federal Officer, Texas 2021

ALPINE, Texas - In a shocking turn of events, 21-year-old Guatemalan citizen Robinson Mendoza-Gomez has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer. The incident occurred on December 14, 2021 near Van Horn.

According to court documents, Border Patrol agents attempted to apprehend a group of suspected undocumented noncitizens. Mendoza demanded that one of the agents release a person in the group. However, when the agent refused, Mendoza charged and struck the agent, injuring their face.

The assault left the agent with serious injuries, and Mendoza's actions were deemed a severe breach of law and order. Mendoza pleaded guilty to one count of Forcibly Assaulting a Federal Officer, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott V. Greenbaum. The FBI is investigating the incident, with FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey R. Downey, El Paso Field Office leading the inquiry. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Ashley C. Hoff, announced the guilty plea.

Mendoza's sentencing date has not been scheduled yet. However, the federal district court judge will determine the final sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
