The City of Austin was shaken by a string of armed robberies committed by 38-year-old Yael Williams Jr. over the summer. The convicted felon was behind three brazen robberies at a Subway restaurant and two 7-11 stores in June and July.
Guilty Plea Leads to Mandatory Minimum Sentence
On June 15, 2023, Williams pleaded guilty to one count of discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and two counts of brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The serious charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 24 years in prison.
Williams' crimes were particularly egregious, as he fired several shots at two bystanders during the robbery of the Subway restaurant. One of the bystanders had attempted to intervene and prevent the robbery.
The Austin Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are credited with investigating the case, which has brought Williams to justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Buie is prosecuting the case, with U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons announcing the guilty plea.
Williams' sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
