ST. LOUIS – A federal jury in the Western District of Missouri has delivered a stunning blow to the 18th Street Gang, convicting two of its members, Herberth Rodríguez, alias ‘Kepa,’ and Elias Martínez Villanueva, alias ‘Rebelde,’ on all counts of a fourth superseding indictment. The charges included murder in-aid-of racketeering and related firearms offenses tied to the November 1, 2020, killing of Diego Vanegas Vásquez.
Rodríguez was also found guilty of racketeering, attempted murder of Juan Valdéz in-aid-of racketeering, as well as narcotics trafficking and unlawful possession of ammunition. Martínez Villanueva, on the other hand, was convicted of illegally re-entering the United States after a three-week trial that wrapped up before Judge William F. Kuntz II.
The convictions follow an intensive investigation by federal law enforcement agencies, which have been cracking down on the transnational street gang known for its ruthless activities and influence in various criminal enterprises. The gang’s members operate across multiple states and have been linked to numerous violent crimes, including murder, extortion, and drug trafficking.
Both defendants now face a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment. This is a significant victory for federal prosecutors who have been working tirelessly to dismantle the 18th Street Gang’s operations in Missouri.
Herberth Rodríguez’s extensive criminal record includes previous convictions for armed robbery and drug possession, while Elias Martínez Villanueva’s conviction for illegal re-entry into the country underscores the gang’s ability to exploit immigration laws for its own gain. The verdict serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by organized crime in Missouri and the federal government’s commitment to eradicating it.
As the trial concluded, victims’ families expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision. They hope that these convictions will bring some closure to their tragic loss and serve as a deterrent for others considering similar crimes.
