Trenton Raid Sparks Fury, False Claims of ICE Overreach

TRENTON, NJ – A routine federal operation in Trenton, New Jersey, spiraled into a political firestorm last week after U.S. Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman falsely accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of unlawful tactics. The raid, targeting Eduardo Reyes, a Guatemalan national wanted for a string of violent crimes, has now become ground zero in a battle over immigration enforcement and public safety, with ICE officials reporting a disturbing surge in threats against their personnel.

The initial enforcement action, conducted on February 20th, centered around the arrest of Eduardo Reyes, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala. He was wanted on charges including aggravated assault, weapons offenses, assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident, and endangering the victim. According to ICE, the arrest was carried out by federal partners acting on a court-ordered criminal warrant – not by ICE directly. Coleman’s claim that ICE “covered security cameras at a Trenton auto repair shop and detaining multiple individuals without a warrant” has been refuted by the agency.

“Regrettably, some sanctuary politicians in New Jersey misrepresent ICE’s clear legal authority established by Congress, resorting to fearmongering and misinformation even after receiving the facts,” stated Arthur J. Wilson Jr., acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark. “Our ICE officers and federal partners deserve recognition for their commitment to public safety, not baseless criticism.” Wilson emphasized that officers followed proper procedure, notifying ICE of the presence of individuals illegally present in the United States during the execution of the warrant.

Beyond Reyes, the operation led to the detention of two additional individuals: Cristian Moreno-Posso, an illegal alien from Colombia with a final order of removal issued in October 2024, and Jorge Luis Lemus Urliz, an illegal alien from Guatemala who entered the United States without inspection. Both remain in custody, pending removal proceedings. ICE officials state they immediately lodged an immigration detainer on Reyes, ensuring he faces consequences for his immigration violations in addition to the criminal charges.

This isn’t just about one raid. ICE claims the misrepresentation of this enforcement action is part of a broader, coordinated campaign to incite violence and hatred against its personnel. The agency reports an alarming 8,000% increase in death threats and a 1,421% increase in assaults against its officers. The timing coincides with the implementation of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which has allowed ICE to expand its operations with a 120% increase in workforce and funding for additional detention centers.

The escalating tensions highlight the deep divisions surrounding immigration policy and law enforcement. While critics accuse ICE of heavy-handed tactics, the agency maintains it is simply upholding the law and protecting communities. As the debate rages on, the safety of both the public and federal officers remains a paramount concern. ICE insists it will continue to enforce federal immigration laws, despite the increasing hostility and threats directed at its personnel.
