Trump Administration Targets AmeriCorps in Sweeping Cuts
NEW YORK – The Trump administration is facing a legal battle after Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 24 other states filed suit today, accusing the administration of illegally dismantling AmeriCorps. The move threatens over 200,000 volunteers nationwide who provide crucial services to vulnerable communities – services the administration appears eager to erase.
The legal action stems from a series of aggressive cuts and staff reductions initiated by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at President Trump’s behest. Beginning April 15th, AmeriCorps began placing hundreds of staff on administrative leave with termination notices slated for the end of the month. The administration reportedly plans to slash AmeriCorps’ workforce by at least 50 percent, effectively gutting its ability to deliver essential services and administer hundreds of millions of dollars in grants.
The hammer truly fell on April 25th, when approximately 80 percent of AmeriCorps grants were abruptly canceled. Attorney General James and the coalition are seeking a court order declaring these actions unlawful and permanently halting the dismantling of the program. “For decades, AmeriCorps members have dedicated themselves to serving others, working to improve lives and strengthen communities throughout our nation,” stated Attorney General James. “AmeriCorps volunteers and staff represent what’s best about our country: a spirit of service and commitment to others that we need now more than ever. The Trump administration’s illegal attempt to gut AmeriCorps will hurt this program which promotes civic pride and public service.”
Established in 1993, AmeriCorps operates as an independent federal agency, currently supporting over 200,000 unpaid members and volunteers annually. These individuals tackle critical issues in every state, including disaster relief, anti-poverty initiatives, education programs, environmental protection, community health, and veteran services. Congress allocated over $1.2 billion for the current fiscal year to support these vital programs. While AmeriCorps directly manages some programs, the bulk of its funding flows to state and local governments, nonprofits, universities, and other organizations.
Here in New York, the Commission on National and Community Service oversees dozens of AmeriCorps programs statewide. Members provide essential support at over 300 locations, offering tutoring, mentorship, housing assistance, legal aid, environmental restoration, veteran support, opioid addiction services, and more. But on April 25th, over $30 million in AmeriCorps grants to New York were canceled, leaving 1,200 members without income or benefits. Agencies now face a brutal choice: continue providing services without funding, or abandon the vulnerable communities they serve.
Among the terminated programs is the Empire State Service Corps, a statewide initiative allowing SUNY students to engage in public service – including K-12 tutoring, benefits access assistance, and peer mental health support. Also cut were programs providing community health education, food for the unhoused, and disaster preparedness. The lawsuit asserts AmeriCorps has begun dismantling its operations, and the states are demanding immediate intervention to protect this critical resource. The future of these programs, and the communities they serve, now hangs in the balance, a stark illustration of the administration’s priorities.
