Monticello Man Accused of Targeting Minor

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Colton Rickels, 19, of Monticello, Iowa, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on one count of attempted enticement of a minor. The indictment, filed on March 4, 2015, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids, details allegations of predatory behavior that have landed the young man in the crosshairs of both state and federal law enforcement.

According to court documents, Rickels allegedly attempted to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce a minor female into engaging in criminal sexual activity back in October 2014. The specifics of the alleged interactions remain sealed, but the charge itself carries a hefty penalty if Rickels is convicted. This isn’t a slap on the wrist; this is a potential life-altering sentence.

If found guilty, Rickels is staring down a mandatory minimum of ten years behind bars, with the possibility of a life sentence. Beyond imprisonment, he could face a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment fee, and a minimum of five years – potentially life – on supervised release following any prison term. The stakes are incredibly high, and the consequences could be devastating.

Rickels made an initial appearance for a detention hearing today in federal court in Cedar Rapids, where he was released on bond. He’s due back in court on May 4, 2015, to begin the process of defending himself against these serious allegations. It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Rickels is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The investigation into Rickels’ alleged actions was a joint effort, involving the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Monticello Police Department, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel, highlighting the coordinated response to combatting child exploitation. This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice.

Project Safe Childhood is a broad effort to identify and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and rescue victims. It pools resources from federal, state, and local agencies.
