Konigsmark Gets 11 Years for Preying on Schoolgirls

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – A depraved former school bus attendant will spend over a decade behind bars after being sentenced today for targeting vulnerable young girls. Tyler Konigsmark, age 20, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received 132 months – eleven years – in federal prison after pleading guilty last September to one count of enticement of minors.

The investigation revealed a sickening pattern of abuse. Between April and May of this year, Konigsmark used the social media app Snapchat and his iPhone to relentlessly solicit sexually explicit images from three girls – ages 12, 13, and 14 – who were regular passengers on the school buses he serviced. The details laid bare in court documents paint a picture of a predator exploiting his position of trust to groom and manipulate these children.

But the abuse didn’t stop at online solicitation. Konigsmark admitted to having sexual intercourse with the 12-year-old victim on two separate occasions. These encounters were arranged through the same digital channels he used to initially contact her, demonstrating a calculated and predatory approach. The details of these meetings are deeply disturbing and underscore the severity of his crimes.

United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett delivered the sentence in Cedar Rapids. Beyond the prison term, Konigsmark was also slapped with a $5,100 special assessment and will be subject to a 10-year term of supervised release upon his eventual release. Critically, he will be required to comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements – ensuring his movements are monitored and the public is aware of his history.

The case was meticulously prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel, with crucial investigative work conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Hiawatha Police Department, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department. This collaborative effort brought a dangerous predator to justice, and hopefully prevented further harm to other vulnerable children.

This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation. The program pools federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals like Konigsmark, while simultaneously working to rescue victims.
