The feds are sounding the alarm about a creeping menace targeting kids online: a twisted subculture pushing nihilistic violence. It’s called Nihilistic Violent Extremism, or NVE, but is also known as “764” on the digital streets. And it’s not just edgy talk. Investigators say these groups actively groom vulnerable kids—some as young as nine—radicalizing them with a message of societal collapse and glorifying mass killers.
The Central District of Illinois is part of a nationwide investigation, with the FBI currently tracking over 450 individuals linked to these networks. The Justice Department admits they’re struggling to keep pace, as more and more children stumble onto these groups lurking on popular social media, gaming platforms, and apps.
Forget political or religious ideologies. NVE is about pure destruction. Think glorified violence, animal cruelty, and encouragement of self-harm. While some perpetrators may have ulterior, sexual motives, others are apparently motivated by a warped desire for belonging or status within the group. Either way, the result is a horrifying pipeline of radicalization hitting kids where they live: online.
