Rez Knife Brawl Turns Fatal

⏱ 3 min read

A night of hard drinking and arguing on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation ended with a man dead and Trent Justin Taylor, 24, of Box Elder, facing years behind bars. Last December 27th, a simple dispute spiraled into a brutal struggle over a kitchen knife, leaving 35-year-old John Doe with a fatal chest wound.

The fight erupted as Doe and his family were preparing to leave a residence while Taylor and others stayed behind. Witnesses say Taylor, already agitated, punched a hole in a wall and threatened to take his own life. Doe tried to intervene, following Taylor into the kitchen in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Instead, things exploded. Taylor grabbed a knife, initially holding it to his own chest, then a fight broke out. Both men reportedly struggled for control of the weapon when Doe was stabbed. Despite frantic attempts at CPR, paramedics pronounced Doe dead at Northern Montana Hospital. The autopsy confirmed the stab wound as the cause of death.

Taylor, already in custody, admitted to involuntary manslaughter. He’s looking at a maximum of eight years in federal prison, plus a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release when – or if – he gets out. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris will deliver the sentence July 16, 2026.

The FBI and the Chippewa Cree Law Enforcement Services handled the investigation, piecing together the chaotic scene that led to Doe’s death. Another senseless act of violence on the reservation, adding another chapter to a grim and ongoing story.
