Charlotte Tech Worker Held Accountable for $2.5M Extortion

CHARLOTTE, NC – A disgruntled ex-employee turned cyber-criminal is facing a long stretch after a federal jury slammed Cameron Curry, 27, with six counts of interstate communication with intent to extort. Curry, a former data analyst, tried to bleed a D.C.-based international tech firm for $2.5 million in crypto after learning he wasn’t getting a contract renewal.

The scheme, carried out under the online alias “Loot” between December 11, 2023, and January 24, 2024, involved a barrage of over 60 threatening emails sent to company employees and brass. Curry leveraged sensitive corporate and employee data he’d pilfered during his six-month stint as an analyst, promising to unleash the information publicly – including personally identifiable information (PII) – unless his demands were met. He didn’t just threaten a data dump; he vowed to destroy the company’s reputation by reporting a breach.

Federal agents with the FBI raided Curry’s Charlotte residence on January 24th, seizing the digital tools of his extortion trade. The trial, presided over by U.S. District Judge Kenneth D. Bell, wrapped up yesterday with the guilty verdict. Sentencing details are pending, but Curry is looking at significant time behind bars for attempting to turn stolen data into a quick payday.
