NEW ORLEANS – Miguel Angel Lopez-Mejia, 34, a Honduran national, walked out of a Louisiana courtroom last week after being sentenced to time served for illegally sneaking back into the United States. Lopez-Mejia admitted in January to re-entering the country on October 16, 2025, despite being kicked out on July 15, 2022.
U.S. District Judge Darrel James Papillion tacked on a year of supervised release and a $100 fine, but the real punishment is the immediate transfer to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a one-way trip back to Honduras.
Federal prosecutors are framing the case as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a broad-stroke initiative promising to crack down on illegal immigration and dismantle cartels. The operation pools resources from existing DOJ task forces.
The investigation was handled by CBP, and the prosecution fell to Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Frederick Veters, Jr.
