Lubec, Maine – A Connecticut man is facing serious federal time after a brazen attempt to evade U.S. Customs and Border Protection turned into a violent confrontation on February 22, 2026. Devin Austin Bishop, 29, of Manchester, CT, is accused of flooring it across the international bridge from Campobello Island, Canada, then attacking the officer who tried to stop him.
According to court papers, Bishop didn’t just cross the border – he tried to run it. Witnesses say he sped across the bridge, swerving into oncoming traffic as he barreled towards Lubec. A CBP officer at the Port of Entry gave chase, and Bishop eventually ditched his car. That’s when things went south.
The officer attempted to arrest Bishop, but the suspect reportedly “forcibly assaulted” him, even going for the officer’s firearm. A shot rang out during the struggle, though miraculously no one was hit. The officer managed to subdue Bishop with help from a good Samaritan passing by.
Bishop is now charged with assaulting a federal officer – a charge that carries a potential eight-year sentence – and failing to report his arrival to the U.S., adding another year to the possible time. The FBI is handling the investigation, with CBP assisting.
Bishop’s next court date has not been announced. As with all criminal cases, he’s presumed innocent until proven guilty.
