ERIE, Pa. – A night out at Players Downtown bar in Bradford nearly turned deadly last year, and today, Damon Leroy Kayes, 43, learned he’ll spend the next 12 and a half years paying for it. Kayes was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison after being convicted of violating federal arson laws, U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton announced.
The scene: 12 Mechanic Street, Bradford, Pennsylvania. A crowded bar. And Kayes, hurling a lit Molotov cocktail directly at the front door. The intent, it doesn’t take a detective to see, wasn’t just damage – it was to endanger everyone inside. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but the potential for tragedy was immense.
U.S. District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin didn’t mince words during sentencing. He laid bare Kayes’ extensive and violent criminal history, making it clear this wasn’t a first offense, and that Kayes demonstrated a blatant disregard for human life. The judge emphasized the serious risk Kayes posed to the bar’s patrons, a risk he callously ignored.
Beyond the prison sentence, Kayes is also on the hook for $2,887.42 in restitution, meant to cover the damages he inflicted. It’s a paltry sum considering the potential cost in lives, but it’s a start. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian A. Trabold skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid argument that secured this conviction.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the City of Bradford Police Department deserve credit for their thorough investigation. They pieced together the evidence, identified Kayes as the perpetrator, and brought him to justice. This wasn’t a random act; it was a calculated, dangerous crime, and their work ensured he’ll answer for it.
U.S. Attorney Hickton’s office remains committed to prosecuting violent offenders and ensuring the safety of communities across Pennsylvania. Kayes’ sentence sends a clear message: deliberately endangering others with fire will not be tolerated. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
