Cedar Falls Sex Offender Gets 21 Months for Registration Failure

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Christopher Pate, 44, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 21 months for deliberately dodging his legal obligation to register as a sex offender. The sentence, handed down by Chief United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade, underscores the serious consequences of failing to comply with sex offender laws, designed to protect communities.

Pate pled guilty on December 15, 2014, to one count of failing to register. Court records show Pate relocated from North Carolina to Iowa, but actively avoided registering with authorities as required. This wasn’t a simple oversight; Pate was legally bound to register due to a 2001 conviction in Black Hawk County for sexual abuse in the third degree. He knowingly broke the law, putting potential victims at risk.

The sentence isn’t just about confinement. In addition to the 21 months’ imprisonment, Pate will be slapped with a $100 special assessment and will face a five-year term of supervised release upon his release. Crucially, he will be required to fully comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements – a constant reminder of his past and a measure to keep the public informed.

Federal and local law enforcement worked together to bring Pate to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel prosecuted the case, with key investigative work conducted by the United States Marshals Service, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office. Their combined efforts demonstrate a commitment to holding sex offenders accountable.

This case is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Childhood,” a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 aimed at dismantling the networks that facilitate child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program pools federal, state, and local resources to track down predators, rescue victims, and ensure justice is served.
