CHARLOTTE, NC – A Charlotte man is staring down a long stretch after a federal jury convicted him yesterday of shaking down a D.C.-based tech giant. Cameron Curry, 27, wasn’t after cash, he wanted $2.5 million in cryptocurrency or he’d leak sensitive company data.
Curry, a former data analyst for the unnamed company, used his inside access to pilfer personnel files and other confidential records when he learned his contract wasn’t getting renewed. Prosecutors say that’s when he hatched the scheme, sending over 60 threatening emails signed “Loot” between December 11, 2023, and January 24, 2024.
The emails weren’t just empty threats, according to evidence presented in court. Curry promised to dump sensitive corporate information and the personal data of employees – everything from names to other PII – unless the company coughed up the crypto. He even threatened to publicly announce a data breach, damaging the company’s reputation.
The FBI raided Curry’s home on January 24th, seizing electronic devices that likely held the stolen data and communication records. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina announced the guilty verdict following a three-day trial presided over by Judge Kenneth D. Bell. Curry was convicted on six counts of interstate communication with intent to extort.
