CHARLOTTE, NC – A Charlotte man is facing a hefty sentence after a federal jury convicted him yesterday of a cold-blooded cyber extortion scheme targeting a major international tech firm. Cameron Curry, 27, thought he could bleed the company for $2.5 million after losing his job.

Curry, a former data analyst with the D.C.-based company, used his inside access to pilfer sensitive personnel and corporate data. When his contract wasn’t renewed, he didn’t just walk away – he weaponized the stolen information.

Between December 11, 2023, and January 24, 2024, Curry, operating under the online alias “Loot,” unleashed a barrage of over 60 threatening emails to company employees and execs. He demanded $2.5 million in cryptocurrency, promising to unleash a data dump of employee personal information and corporate secrets if his demands weren’t met. He threatened to publicly expose a data breach, damaging the company’s reputation.

The FBI swooped in on January 24th, raiding Curry’s home and seizing the electronic devices used to carry out the scheme. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson’s office prosecuted the case. Judge Kenneth Bell presided over the three-day trial, and now Curry awaits sentencing.
