Florida Man Accused of Seattle Arson Over $20K Debt

SEATTLE – A Margate, Florida man is facing federal charges after authorities connected him to a 2013 arson that ripped through a South Seattle home and the discovery of an unignited destructive device at a related property. SANG NGOC UNG, 53, was arrested yesterday, nearly a decade after the incident, and is accused of escalating a bitter financial dispute into a dangerous act of violence.

According to a criminal complaint unsealed today, the June 10, 2013, fire at 3939 S. Cloverdale Street forced a Seattle family – a homeowner, her adult children, and a friend – to escape through windows and the garage as flames engulfed their residence. The blaze caused extensive damage. Investigators discovered a second, failed attempt at destruction at another home linked to the same family shortly after the fire. UNG is currently charged with possession of that unignited device.

The root of the alleged crime? A $20,000 debt. Federal prosecutors claim UNG had been relentlessly pressuring family members in Seattle for repayment, even after they’d attempted to satisfy a portion of the sum. Threats continued, the complaint states, until UNG arrived in the Seattle area in mid-May 2013, renewing his demands. Witnesses reportedly observed UNG attempting to contact individuals at both homes on June 9, 2013 – the day before the fire and discovery of the device.

Investigators built their case on a combination of circumstantial and forensic evidence. Cell phone records place UNG in the Seattle area during the critical timeframe. Crucially, evidence recovered from the unignited destructive device allegedly links him directly to the scene. He returned to the area yesterday, walking straight into a coordinated arrest by Seattle Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF).

UNG is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Seattle at 1:30 PM today. He is charged with possession of a destructive device. While this charge is currently filed, prosecutors have indicated UNG remains a suspect in the arson itself, suggesting further charges may be forthcoming.

Assistant United States Attorney Todd Greenberg is prosecuting the case. The investigation was a joint effort between the Seattle Police Department and the ATF. It’s vital to remember that the charges contained in the complaint are allegations at this stage, and UNG is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
