Brooklyn Federal Correctional Officer James Johnson is facing charges of sexually abusing an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). An indictment unsealed today alleges Johnson, while on duty, engaged in sexual acts with a person under his guard.
Johnson, a veteran of the Bureau of Prisons, is also accused of lying to federal investigators when questioned about the abuse. He was arrested today and is scheduled to appear before a judge this afternoon.
Federal prosecutors say Johnson abused his position of authority, exploiting a vulnerable inmate for personal gratification. The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI, the DOJ Office of the Inspector General, and the New York State Police.
“This is a betrayal of the public trust,” said US Attorney Joseph Nocella. “Our office will relentlessly pursue corruption and abuse within federal prisons.” The FBI echoed that sentiment, stating that correctional officers are meant to protect inmates, not victimize them.
