Brooklyn Federal Correctional Officer James Johnson is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn. An indictment unsealed today accuses Johnson of sexual abuse, abuse of a ward, and lying to federal investigators.
Johnson, still employed by the Bureau of Prisons, was arrested today and is due in court later this afternoon before Chief Magistrate Judge Vera Scanlon. The charges stem from a pattern of abuse where Johnson allegedly exploited his position to prey on a vulnerable inmate.
Federal prosecutors, led by US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr., say Johnson “leveraged his position” to abuse an inmate he was entrusted to guard. The FBI and the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General led the investigation, highlighting the deep concern over corruption within federal prisons.
“This is a grave betrayal of public trust,” stated FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle. “Federal correctional officers are sworn to protect, not prey upon, those in their care.” The investigation, aided by the New York State Police, is a clear signal that abuse within the system will not be tolerated.
