Jeffrey Huygens Pleads Guilty

Jeffrey Huygens, a 47-year-old man from Sioux City, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to distributing and receiving child pornography in federal court. On February 25, 2013, Huygens admitted to using the Internet to distribute child pornography between September 2011 and December 2011, and to receive child pornography between 2002 and March 2012.

Huygens also admitted to a previous conviction of Child Molestation in the First Degree in Island County, Washington, in 1990. His guilty plea includes one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of receipt of child pornography. The charges against Huygens are severe, and he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 80 years’ imprisonment.

In addition to the prison time, Huygens may also be required to pay $500,000 in fines, a $200 special assessment, and will be subject to supervised release for 5 years to life following his imprisonment. The sentencing hearing will be held before United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien, and Huygens will remain in custody of the United States Marshal until then.

This case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
