A chilling new front in the fight against violent extremism is emerging, and it’s targeting kids. The Justice Department is sounding the alarm on decentralized networks—dubbed “764” or “Nihilistic Violent Extremism” (NVE)—that are actively recruiting and radicalizing children online, with potential for sexual exploitation mixed in.
This isn’t about traditional ideology. These groups, thriving on platforms kids use every day – social media, gaming apps – preach a message of societal collapse through chaos. They glorify mass killers, revel in animal cruelty, and even encourage self-harm. It’s a recipe for disaster, and the FBI is scrambling to keep up.
Federal investigators are currently tracking over 450 individuals tied to these networks across the country, including cases right here in the Central District of Illinois. The victims? Mostly under 18, some as young as nine. Agents say the motivations vary – some perpetrators are ideologically driven, others seek status within the group, but all are preying on vulnerable kids.
The DOJ isn’t just pointing fingers at the platforms; they’re urging parents, teachers, and communities to be hyper-vigilant. This isn’t some far-off threat. It’s happening now, in the spaces where children spend their time, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
