FENTON, IOWA – Timothy Koenck, 54, of Fenton, Iowa, will spend nearly three decades behind bars after being sentenced for a sickening cycle of abuse and exploitation. Koenck received 355 months – almost 30 years – in federal prison on February 3, 2014, after pleading guilty to charges that included preying on a minor.
The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett in Sioux City, stems from Koenck’s admitted guilt to one count of enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity, one count of committing a felony offense involving a minor while already a registered sex offender, and two counts of possession of child pornography. This wasn’t Koenck’s first foray into depravity; he was previously convicted of similar offenses in 2001-2002, demonstrating a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Federal prosecutors detailed a case built on the horrific reality of child exploitation. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel successfully argued for the lengthy sentence, highlighting the severity of Koenck’s actions and his prior record. In addition to the prison term, Koenck was ordered to pay a $400 special assessment and will be subject to a ten-year term of supervised release upon his eventual release. Crucially, he will be required to comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements – a measure aimed at protecting future potential victims.
The investigation into Koenck’s crimes was a collaborative effort, involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mower County, Minnesota, Sheriff’s Office. Their combined work brought Koenck to justice and removed a dangerous predator from the streets. The case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of child sexual abuse and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
This case was prosecuted under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The program aims to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse by pooling federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and to rescue victims. Project Safe Childhood is a critical component in the ongoing fight against these heinous crimes.
