Luis Velez Sentenced for Meth

Luis Velez, a 52-year-old Lincoln, Nebraska man, has been sentenced to 156 months imprisonment for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. This sentence will be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release, as announced by United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg.

The sentencing was handed down by United States District Judge John M. Gerrard, following Velez’s earlier guilty plea to the charges. The case against Velez stemmed from a search warrant served by the Lincoln Police Department in December 2013 at an apartment located at 1979 South Street in Lincoln.

During the search of the apartment, police found 65.99 grams of methamphetamine in Velez’s bedroom, along with $2,700 and a 9mm handgun. The significant amount of methamphetamine and the presence of a firearm suggest that Velez was involved in a larger drug trafficking operation.

Velez’s roommate, Daniel Kuta, was also implicated in the case and was sentenced in December to 235 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. The investigation was led by the Lincoln/Lancaster County Drug Task Force, which worked to dismantle the drug trafficking network.

The sentencing of Luis Velez serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the scourge of methamphetamine in communities across the country. The possession and distribution of this highly addictive and destructive drug have devastating consequences for individuals and families, and it is imperative that those involved in its trafficking are held accountable.

The case against Velez and his associates demonstrates the importance of collaborative efforts between local and federal law enforcement agencies in the fight against drug trafficking. By working together, these agencies can disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking networks, reducing the availability of illicit substances and promoting safer communities.

In handing down the sentence, United States District Judge John M. Gerrard took into account the severity of the offense and the need to protect the public from further harm. The sentence of 156 months imprisonment, followed by a 5-year term of supervised release, reflects the serious nature of the crime and the need for Velez to be held accountable for his actions.
