WHITESBORO, OKLAHOMA – Kenny Ray Smith, 62, is headed to federal prison for two decades after a jury found him guilty of peddling meth in eastern Oklahoma. Smith got 240 months – that’s 20 years – for each of two counts of methamphetamine distribution, to be served at the same time.
Investigators with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN), the District 16 DA’s office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) built the case. According to court documents, Smith made a sale of 27.85 grams of meth to an undercover OBN operative on June 27, 2024. Less than two weeks later, on July 9th, he upped the ante, selling 52.9 grams of the drug during a joint operation between the DEA and OBN.
Federal prosecutors and OBN officials are hailing the sentence as a win in the ongoing fight against the state’s meth crisis. “Mr. Smith’s crimes and his long history of drug trafficking in Eastern Oklahoma have proven him to be deserving of this sentence,” stated U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Wilson. OBN Director Donnie Anderson added that meth remains a major driver of drug-related deaths in Oklahoma and that his agency will keep cracking down on suppliers like Smith.
DEA officials underscored that the sentence sends a message to repeat offenders looking to profit from the deadly drug. Smith’s criminal history, which wasn’t detailed in the official release, clearly demonstrated a “pattern of harm” authorities say they “will not tolerate.”
