WOODBURN, OR – A 51-year-old Oregon man is in federal hot water after allegedly leaving a voicemail promising to execute a U.S. Senator. Donald Leroy Smith Jr., of Woodburn, was charged today with threatening a federal official, a felony carrying a potential five-year sentence.
According to court filings, Smith dialed up the Senator on November 12, 2025, and unleashed a string of violent threats. The voicemail, detailed in the complaint, included Smith declaring he was “coming to kill you,” that the Senator “need[ed] to be dead,” and promising to “put a bullet in your head.”
Smith made an initial appearance in federal court today but was released pending further hearings. It’s a standard procedure, but this guy left a *very* specific threat, and the feds aren’t taking it lightly.
The investigation is a multi-agency effort, pulling in the FBI, Capitol Police, Secret Service, Postal Inspectors, Oregon State Police, and the Woodburn PD. First Assistant U.S. Attorney William M. Narus and Assistant U.S. Attorney James A. Kilcup are handling the prosecution.
Remember, an indictment is just the start. Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
