Julio Cesar Fernandez-Salazar, 44, is facing federal charges in Connecticut for illegally sneaking back into the country – again. The Mexican national was indicted March 17, 2026, after being busted by Connecticut State Police in Colchester on November 27, 2024, for drunk and drugged driving. This wasn’t his first rodeo with the law, or with deportation.
Court records paint a picture of a man determined to return to the U.S. despite repeated removals. Back in 2007, he landed 45 days in an Arizona jail for an immigration violation and was sent back to Mexico. He was back within two years, racking up convictions for failure to appear and driving with a suspended license in Tempe, Arizona, before being deported again in 2009. Border Patrol caught him trying to cross near the border that same year – and deported him yet again.
Fernandez-Salazar’s pattern of lawbreaking continued. In 2017, he was convicted in Arizona of unlawful imprisonment and soliciting weapons misconduct. That led to another federal reentry charge in 2018, and, you guessed it, another deportation. Despite all that, he ended up back in the U.S. and under arrest in Connecticut.
Federal prosecutors finally caught up with him in Arizona on February 25, 2026. He’s been held without bail ever since. If convicted of unlawful reentry, he faces a potential prison sentence – though it remains to be seen if that will finally keep him away from the border. U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan is prosecuting the case.
