Repeat Offenders Get Prison Time

⏱ 3 min read

Las Vegas federal court slammed four repeat offenders with prison sentences this week for the simple fact of being back in the United States after being kicked out – a lot of times. Alfredo Covarrubias-Jimenez, Moises Jeronimo-Martin, Angel David Olivera-Hernandez, and Rigoberto Osorio-Merlo all pleaded guilty to illegally reentering the country, knowing full well they weren’t supposed to be here.

Covarrubias-Jimenez, 5-times deported, caught the heaviest sentence: 16 months behind bars, followed by three years supervised release. The guy wasn’t a stranger to Nevada lockup either, having served 24 to 120 months for drug trafficking and a prior domestic violence conviction in California. Jeronimo-Martin, with six prior deportations, got 13 months and one day, plus a year on supervision – he’d already done 12-30 months in state prison for a felony DUI.

Olivera-Hernandez, deported once before, drew 12 months and a day, plus three years supervised release. His record showed a 24-60 month stretch in Nevada for conspiracy to commit robbery. Osorio-Merlo, from Honduras and with two prior removals, received nine months imprisonment and three years supervision following a 12-30 month sentence for reckless driving that caused serious harm.

Each man admitted to knowingly violating federal immigration law. Judge Navarro made it clear: these aren’t first-time mistakes. Once they complete their federal sentences, all four will be deported again, although whether that finally sticks remains to be seen.
