A late-night argument on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation turned deadly last December, and now Trent Justin Taylor, 24, of Box Elder, is staring down the barrel of a federal prison sentence. Taylor pleaded guilty today to involuntary manslaughter in the death of John Doe, 35, after a chaotic struggle involving a kitchen knife.

According to court documents, the incident unfolded December 27, 2025, as Doe and his family were preparing to leave a residence while Taylor and others remained. An argument flared up between Taylor and his girlfriend, escalating to Taylor punching a hole in the wall and threatening suicide. Doe intervened, attempting to prevent Taylor from harming himself, and followed him into the kitchen.

That’s where things went sideways. Taylor grabbed a knife, initially pointing it at his own chest. Doe tried to disarm him, and a fight ensued. Witnesses claim both men had their hands on the knife’s handle when Doe suffered the fatal stab wound. Despite immediate attempts at CPR, Doe was pronounced dead at Northern Montana Hospital. An autopsy confirmed the chest wound as the cause of death.

Taylor, currently held pending sentencing, faces a maximum of eight years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris will hand down the sentence on July 16, 2026, after considering sentencing guidelines. The FBI and Chippewa Cree Law Enforcement Services spearheaded the investigation.
