Florence, South Carolina – Alaina Ny’sha Thomas, 24, confessed in federal court today to filming the sexual abuse of a child. The FBI uncovered the sickening content – two videos showing Thomas engaged in sexual activity with a minor – lurking on a dark web forum this June. The abuse itself took place back in January 2020, but investigators finally traced the footage back to Thomas and her subsequent online distribution of it.
The FBI Columbia Field Office and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office spent months piecing together the digital trail. Sources say the videos were uploaded to an anonymous forum, but investigators were able to link the content back to Thomas. She then allegedly sent the footage to an unidentified contact online, further compounding the exploitation.
Thomas now faces up to 30 years in a federal prison cell, along with a $250,000 fine. Restitution payments to the victim are also likely, as is a lifetime on supervised release if she ever gets out. Judge Joseph Dawson, III accepted her plea, but sentencing will be delayed until a full probation report is completed.
This case is part of the Department of Justice’s ‘Project Safe Childhood,’ a nationwide initiative targeting online child exploitation. The DOJ isn’t exactly known for being transparent, but this operation suggests they’re trying to clean up the digital cesspool where predators thrive. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Hummel led the prosecution.
