Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Justice Department has inked a landmark deal with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health to address grave civil rights violations at the C.M. Tucker Jr. Nursing Care Center in Columbia. The state-owned facility, which cares for nearly 360 residents, including 70 veterans, has been under fire for its subpar care.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker praised the cooperation of state officials and the Department of Mental Health, emphasizing the agreement’s focus on providing comprehensive medical, mental health, and nursing services to ensure resident well-being.
The settlement mandates improvements in vital areas such as medical care, nutrition, pain management, fall prevention, and social activities. Residents will also receive care tailored to their integration into a suitable setting.
This investigation followed the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA), which targets systemic failures rather than isolated incidents. The Justice Department has successfully implemented similar reforms across numerous states, with ongoing investigations in Alabama, Minnesota, and Mississippi.
