A twisted online connection turned horrifyingly real. Michael J. Machonis, 30, of Bridgewater, New Jersey, and Asia Tamara Billups, 20, of Gloucester, Virginia, are headed to federal prison after exploiting a three-year-old toddler and a four-month-old infant. Billups recorded sexually explicit videos of the children in May and June of 2024, then sent them to Machonis. The pair met online, initially trading explicit content before escalating to discussing and exchanging abuse imagery.
Court documents show the exchange quickly spiraled. Billups, using her cellphone, filmed the abuse, and Machonis actively solicited it. The FBI’s Norfolk Field Office, with help from Somerset County, NJ prosecutors, cracked the case. They found a clear pattern of coercion and enticement by Machonis, driving the abuse.
Billups pleaded guilty to two counts of production of CSAM and one count of distribution in April 2025, receiving a 15-year sentence on September 19, 2025. Machonis followed, entering a guilty plea to two counts of coercion and enticement and one count of receiving CSAM on October 24, 2025. Today, he got 17 years.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter G. Osyf prosecuted the case under Project Safe Childhood, a federal initiative aimed at stopping the spread of child exploitation online. This case highlights the dark side of internet connections and the devastating consequences for vulnerable victims.
