Attorney General Investigates VPD Fatality in Vestal

New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a probe into the tragic death of Eslam Hegazy, who succumbed to injuries following an encounter with Vestal Police Department (VPD) officers in Vestal, Broome County.

The incident unfolded on February 25, 2026, when VPD officers were called to a residence after receiving a 911 call. Upon arrival between 11:45 a.m. and 11:49 a.m., the officers encountered Hegazy outside with a knife in hand. Officers ordered Hegazy to drop the weapon, and during the confrontation, a Taser was used against him. Despite the application of the Taser, Hegazy reportedly retained possession of the knife when two officers discharged their service weapons, ultimately hitting him.

Hegazy was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day. A knife was recovered from the scene by the police.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is tasked with reviewing all incidents reported to them where a law enforcement officer may have caused a death through action or inaction. This includes both on-duty and off-duty officers, as well as situations involving armed and unarmed individuals, and whether the deceased was in custody or incarcerated. If OSI determines that an officer may have been responsible for the death, they proceed with a comprehensive investigation.

These are preliminary facts, and the situation remains under active review by the OSI. The agency emphasizes that any conclusions drawn will be based on a thorough examination of all available evidence.
