Attorney General James Launches Trial Against St. Clare’s Diocese

New York – The grim saga of St. Clare’s Hospital pensioners took a dramatic turn today as New York Attorney General Letitia James opened trial proceedings against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany and its affiliated leadership for alleged pension fraud.

“No one should ever bear the financial and emotional toll of losing their retirement,” James stated. “St. Clare’s leadership callously deprived hundreds of dedicated workers, including nurses, social workers, and lab technicians, of their hard-earned pensions.”

The lawsuit, filed in May 2022, accuses the Diocese and senior executives of violating fiduciary duties by neglecting to secure employees’ pensions, failing to contribute to the pension fund for all but two years between 2000 and 2019, and concealing the collapse of the pension plan from vested workers. James is seeking to recover lost funds and hold the accused accountable.

Attorney General James has been battling the Diocese since May 2025, after a judge refused to dismiss the case before trial. The trial, presided over by Judge Vincent Versaci of the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Schenectady County, marks the first day of this pivotal legal battle.

“These workers deserve every penny they were promised for their years of service,” James concluded. “Our office is committed to ensuring justice is served.”
