Broome Cop Death Probe Launched

New York’s Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a probe into the tragic death of Eslam Hegazy in Vestal, Broome County. Hegazy, 35, met his demise on February 25 following an encounter with the Vestal Police Department (VPD).

The grim incident unfolded at approximately 11:45 a.m., when VPD officers responded to a distress call. Upon arrival, they encountered Hegazy outside the residence, wielding a knife. The officers ordered him to surrender the weapon, deploying a Taser in the process. Despite this, Hegazy reportedly retained the knife when two officers discharged their service weapons, ultimately striking him.

Hegazy was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries later that day. A knife was recovered at the scene of the incident. Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to review any reported incidents where an officer may have caused a person’s death by act or omission.

This investigation comes as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between law enforcement and public safety. The preliminary facts of this case are subject to change as the OSI delves deeper into the tragic encounter.

As the investigation unfolds, residents of Broome County await answers, while law enforcement officials maintain their professional decorum. This probe is a testament to the New York AG’s Office commitment to transparency and justice.
